Sounds like someone did a bootleg repair sometime back.

Plain shafts should be around and easily acquired, as many Vanagons as there are today being canabalized. The Trannies and Engines go, but I wonder if there is much demand for the shafts. They don't get used up like engines and trannies.

Just find a proper shaft.
