It's the same handle as on the inside front of the door, mounted in the horizontal position, with the handle tip facing the front of the vehicle. Sorry, don't have my digital camera at the ready or I'd upload a pic to the website for all to view.

Someone earlier said that ETKA doesn't show it. However, if you look carefully in the Camper Section, SubGroup 70, Illustration 96-00, you will see the handle. However, only the hold-down screw for it is shown with a part reference number (Item Key 17F). If you go to 17F on the parts text page it shows this screw attaching the handle shown up thru Westfalia Serial # E-010-000 (end of 1984 production). Interesting, because even though they shown the handle in the illustration, they don't show a part reference number for replacement. Note, I said above mine's mounted horizontally, but the illustration shows the handle tip facing downwards (looked at mine, it's do-able).

A parts counterperson at VW w/o any older VW knowledge would probably say the handle's not available, but someone who knows their parts could easily guess it's 253-843-642 handle, which is, of course, readily available.

Knowledgeably yours.......
