Joy,

This is a real common problem with the Vanagon speedo. There is a gear on a shaft that moves or loosens and results in dis-engaging the teeth in it's companion gear and the counter stops. One of the things that seems to aggravate things and precipitate this condition is pushing the reset button while the vehicle is rolling. Once you get this repaired or replaces, try and avoid situations where you push the reset button while on the roll.

There is at least one website that advertises repair of speedometers. I don't have it but I'm sure some of the list members do have it. Maybe someone will speak up.

In my case, after being aggravated to death with the problem, I bought a brand new speedometer. That's expensive - $180 at Camelback VW in Phoenix, AZ - 800-876-5199. If you go this route be sure and tell them you are a member of the Vanagon List and your location/state. Do it before they quote you their price. This should net you a nice discount. Somehow if you are in AZ you don't get the best price. Don't know why that is but that's the way it is.

Regards,

John Rodgers 88 GL Driver Chelsea, AL
