First thing first Chris....
1-) Don't panic
2-) Don't call the police
3-) Don't tell the wife
4-) Clean the under part of the engine with "Brake Cleaner" and some rags
5-) Run the van and look, just to be sure you know it's in the bell housing.
6-) Droping the Vanagon tranny is a joke compare to any other car/van (11 in
the past 2 month) (Exception!!! the Syncro!!!!)
7-) Let me know if you are in a rush and if Tom's instruction are not
enought (i think they are), but like always, i got better and bigger
pictures than Tom (he he he, just a joke Tom, your DA men)
Seriously.... i also made a Clutch /Seal / Tranny section but it's not
finish... i can finish that for you tonight if you want... At least put some
pictures online...
For now, here are a few Engine clutch / seal / tranny pictures from a 78
Bus, exact same stuff as a Vanagon....
http://www.benplace.com/bjp/100_0024_78.jpg (removing flywheel)
http://www.benplace.com/bjp/100_0026_78.jpg (the seal in question)
http://www.benplace.com/bjp/100_0050_78.jpg (possible other leak tranny side)
If you do that job.... don't forget the Flywheel inner O-ring / seal,
lately, this one was the cause... and not the main rear seal....
Also, your clutch should be slipping!!!! or buging (can i say that????), you
kknow when you feel the clutch giving some kicking!!!!
Cheers, Ben

I was under my 1987 Van today and saw something that looks bad. Their is oil
everywhere It's engine oil and it's coming (I think) down thought the bell
housing I'm afraid it's the rear engine seal. I would like to know how bad
of a job it is to replace and if I have to have it done in a shop about what
should I expect to pay to get that done?
Does anyone know what size allen wrench the top starter bolt is? Someone
here said to let the allen key brace it self against the bell housing and
take the nut off the other end but, on mine it's just bolts that go into the
bell housing. Thanks again for any and all information.
