I've traveled extensively on the north, west, and south shores. I find the small state parks and simlar areas to be the most rewarding (if you're not going to kayak on the lake, that is, which is amazing but not for everyone). I am also keen on waterfalls and there are plenty.

Specifically I recommend short hikes at: CR Magney State park (MN), Cascade River state park (MN), Tettegouche state park (MN), Temperence river state park (MN), Black River (Michigan, NR Wisconsin border), Presque Isle River (MI, right at the mouth of the river).

In general I find the north shore much more interesting than the south. The canadian north shore is less peopled but less accessible by road, so that leaves the MN portion as the place I would spend the most time. I dont' know the east part at all, though.
