I'd suggest cleaning off the surfaces with carbon tetrachloride or (if you want to prevent ozone depletion) a chlorineless degreaser and bolt them together bare. A good gasket will stick naturally to bare metal.

That red silicone stuff is for rookies and desperadoes.
