Subject: Aux Battery Installation - How to do?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII

I have an 88 Westfalia with the full refrig, stove etc package. I've finally decided that it would be nice to have a auxillary battery to power things when parked. I have found that it's really easy to start the refrig on gas if it's been running on AC or DC for a little while so that the 'chimney' is warm and drawing a draft. Being able to cut it on for a short on the battery while sitting still would be a nice feature.

I have seen various bits of info here and there on what to do. Here's what I know: I've looked under the driver's seat and sure enough, there is the place for the second battery and there is the little relay on the inside wall of that space with wires that go up to the fuse block that's just forward of the interior cabinet on the driver's side.

I think that I can figure out what size battery to get and I know that the negative side of the aux. battery goes to a ground connection and that the positive side of the aux. battery goes to one of the terminals on the relay in that space, I think...

I know that there's an individual selling an instruction package on ebay with pictures etc, but before I go that route, I thought I'd try casting my net among the group of Vanagon owners who share what they know and support one another.

Do any of you have experience that you would share? I do have better than average electrical skills, but a quick look at my Bentley manual didn't make things crystal clear.

Thanks, :-)
