John,

There are mountains of posts in the archives with debates over whether to use a relay or an isolator and some of the answer depends on how often you will deeply discharge the battery and how fast you need it to recharge.

I have saved quite a bit of this material and will send most of what I have to you. I will assume that you have a high speed connection, not dialup, as the file is almost 1.5 Mb. I have some of both approaches in the material.

VW used a relay and I think for most people this set up is fine. It is simpler, and cheaper. Plus you already have some of the wiring in place. The relay you have is for the fridge and there have been some cautions about using that relay and some instructions that are on the vanagon.com website. I might not have that material in what I have saved as I have approached the issue with a standard passenger van in mind.

Bus Depot sells a kit with instructions for less than what the ebay auctions usually cost you. You might not need this with the Westy's existing wiring.

Sam
