Go to http://gerry.vanagon.com. The search is very slow if you do not limit the date range.

My '88 is an 8mm hex, with a 17mm nut that is somewhat difficult to reach on the engine side of the bellhousing. The lower bolt is 17mm on both ends I believe. The upper one *might* be the same as the starter bolt on A2 Golf/Jettas, and if so, could also be a triple-square (12point) similar to a head bolt. I've seen both used on A2s. I'd recommend using the hex end to hold, and tring to break loose at the 17mm nut end to minimize risk of stripping the head. I had my starter out 4-5 times this summer when it drowned on me, so I got to the point where I could do it in about 5 minutes w/o raising the van. I do the upper first (leave bolt in, remove nut), then slide under & remove wiring (disconnect battery ground first), then lower bolt & starter.
