Subject: Pulling the engine out or not!! (Head gasket)

Since i replied to many in private...

After a very busy start in the past 3 months (about 9 engine pull / no lift).

About pulling the engine out or not when doing the heads gasket:

First thing to remember, do you have a hydro/electric lift? how about engine stand, engine crane, big floor lift? I guess not for most of you guys! Lets say you have one (lift), well how is the condition of the exaust system? Rusty bolt? I would only do a heads job if i had a lift and with a very healty exhaust system... even with a very healthy EX system but no lift it's a pain in the b*** to work under that van with some heavy parts like the heads, piston, sleeve, exhaust....

Anyway, that is my opinion. With minimal tools an engine is on the bench in about 4 to 6 hours (2 guys)... then, is so easy to work in and around this one...

Am pulling out an 85 this weekend, i will take many pictures (i kind of forgot lately....), especially on the gaskets replacement job by itself (lower sleeve ring, sleeve/cylinders removal, heads diagnostic, upper head gasket and rings, torque...) Tools needed, sealant.... i may also do a piston removal procedure if i have some spare time.

Cheers, Ben http://www.benplace.com/vw2.htm
