On my '88, it's under the dash if I recall, but I haven't found it yet on my '82 (haven't really looked, since I have a bottle of VW touchup paint with the code). I'm guessing it's in the engine bay somewhere.

Try this, it shows all the possible locations, and lists the codes for your year. You can usually narrow it down by finding the available colours for that year:
