That engine was available with a supercharger; as it was called "Estima Supercharger", I assume that Toyota used a supercharger OTHER than a turbo. Yes, it's a flat-4 and should fit right in there. Or the 2.2 turbo diesel equivalent... But I guess neither of these engines was sold in the US.
