I used such a device on my '84 for a time. The biggest problem I had was the "Helpfulness" of others trying to shut the hatch for me. I lived in constant fear of bending or warpage.

I can see installing one (along with good struts) for those times when I'm carrying a bicycle on the rear hatch.
