Hi Jere,

Unless someone else says differently, my manual says you get 3 tries before it locks up. You then disconnect the radio, reconnect and try again. After 3 more unsuccessful tries, it supposedly is locked for good. The manual says, and I quote, "You may try for the last time, another 3 trial and error processes but on the fourth time, the unit will be definitely inoperative", (page 5 Note 2, "Sound Choice" Heidelberg CR owner's manual).

I guess it's time for a new radio after that, not that that would be a tragedy considering the sound quality I get from mine. ;)

Milo,

But what if the previous owner gave the wrong number and you try this 3 times and the radio locks up. Is there any way out of this?

Jere

Good Morning TJ,

With the radio on and the display reading "SAF e", press both the "AM/FM" button and the "Scan" button for more than 3 seconds. "SAF e" will disappear and you will see 1000 displayed. Using the square station preset buttons, tap in the code number by repeatedly pressing the corresponding station preset button, i.e. 1 push for 1, 7 pushes for 7. You can go back and forth till you get it right as long as you don't dawdle too much. When the code is correct, depress both the "AM/FM" and "Scan" buttons for more than 3 seconds and you should have the FM band displaying 87.9, and you are good.

Hope this helps,

Dave Milo

Stop the power discussion or take it to a power list. I'm here for VANAGON info!

Rant over.

OK, I started looking at list messages around 0600 EST. Does that mean I have some sort of disease???

Anyone know which buttons to push so I can enter the code into my factory radio and get rid of the SAFE message? The PO thoughtfully wrote the code in several places in the factory manual but lost the radio manual. I'm out in my 88 pushing buttons hoping I'll hit the right combo.

Thanks TJ
