Answers to questions 4 & 5 require the engine to be mounted. Answers to questions 1, 2 & 3 require the engine to be un-mounted. I have an unmounted AEL engine, so I can provide answers to the first three questions, but not the last two. It will require a trip to my shop, I can do this tomorrow. Are you able to share any details of how you got your AEL conversion running?

I spent a few hours just tinkering in the shop today. I have an 115hp ATJ engine code TDI that is from a B5 Passat with it's transmission. The engine will eventually find it's way into my Syncro Westfalia, but I want to experiment with it a bit first. Some of the things I want to try is to use the dual mass flywheel that came with engine, but, as Murphy would have it, it isn't going to be easy. One thing I did notice is that the transmission will bolt to an I4 and an I5 engine!

Seeing how this was designed to go into a place where an I5 can sit, I have a few questions for the group.

1 On the I5 motors, what is the distance from the block straight out to where starter teeth on the flywheel begins? 2 What is the diameter of the I5 flywheel? 3 What is the distance form the block to the "flat" area where you would push on the clutch fingers with the throw out bearing? 4 What angle from the horizontal is an I5 motor in the back of a Vanagon? 5 What is the distance between the two motor mount "pins" that go into the cross member?
