Larry,

I was confused with Joel's response. But when I checked the tail pipe this is what I found:

Black inside, yes. Dry soot, yes. Wet and black, no. A lot of soot, no.

I was comparing to this from Joel:

>any really dark sooty stuff in the tailpipe? as in wet black soot? it >should be black, but not a lot of soot and definitely not black. if black >sooty and a lot, it's running too rich. might be an injector that is >spraying too much. >noticed any loss/lack of power lately?

I was hoping Joel might let me know what this means or if it sounds normal or rich?

>RE: might be an injector that is spraying too much.

>*How is this "checked" or fixed (injector spraying too much....)? What is >too much?

I don't have my Type II/ Vanagon Fuel System Manual here with me at work to tell you. But I could get the info for you. It might possibly be in the Bentley, too. It takes a good "measurement of the fluid" per "elapsed time". The best way is with the injector under normal pressure and a rig to have it pulse (open/closed) under normal working conditions. You could add power to the connections on the injector, but IIRC you can also easily burn out your injector this way. Here is a good explanation of how they are rebuilt, also a good deal if you are in the market to have yours done.

For further information here is a scan of the manual some pages are fuzzy. Check out page 23. Compliments of Mr. Potts a new Vanagon Owner that has come to the Dark Side of the Force from the other list as I have.
