I have both engines, one from an 86 Jetta TD and one in my current 91 ECOdiesel. THe differences are the inj. pump has a boost enrichment circuit which pumps more fuel into the engine when under boost pressure, and the ECOdiesel inj. pump does not. ECOdiesel puts out 59HP while the TD puts out 69HP. They are interchangeable as far as installing them but I would not use an ECOdiesel in a vanagon. It is only 7 more HP than the non-turbo motor. The purpose of the ECOdiesel was to reduce emissions by pumping a little more air into the combustion chambers. There is also a catalytic converter to burn soot before it goes out the tailpipe. Overall, the TD is better since it gets nearly 50 MPG and puts out 10 more HP where the ECOdiesel only gets 42 MPG in the same driving conditions and route. I typically get 200-300,000 miles out of these before it is time to do major overhaul work with synthetic lubes and diesel fuel modifier additives. The long blocks are the same with many interchangeable parts. The ECOdiesel inj. pump has a fast idle position on the cold start cable to assist the idle when the AC is on! It also has a fuel return to the fuel filter before sending excess fuel back to the tank. That helps if you are low on fuel and in winter warm fuel goes to the filter to help warm the cold fuel from the tank.
