There is normally lots of radial play. The end is actually supported by the pilot bearing. The bolt I think you are referring to is the guide pin for the 1-2 gear selector. It keeps the lever from sliding side to side. To set it, remove the end cap, (the housing with the reverse light switch). With the trans set in neutral, remove the outside selector lever (with the ball) and push the selector shaft out. You can then reach inside and set the 1-2 lever and reinstall the bolt. A heli-coil can repair the threads if needed. Is it possible some tried to disassemble the trans? Maybe the shaft broke off the 1-2 lever and there is no 1st or 2nd. This is a common failure and it will require a teardown to fix.

Although I have a transmission on order, I had the opportunity to get a good deal (maybe too good...) on a used one. I spent the last few hours playing with it, and have some questions.

-What is the maximum allowable radial play for the input shaft? (If it's in Bentley, I apologize) What would the normal cause of play be? Is there an easy fix?

-There's a funky bolt with a weird-o rounded end on the top of the case, on the left side, toward the front, near the reverse light switch. I think it has something to do with the reverse mechanism. It's the only bolt that comes out It is loose and the threads in the case are damaged. Should I care?

Thanks!
