Subject: Re: 84 westy coolant leak - bolt?
Comments: To: Karen D <yosemite333@HOTMAIL.COM>

Overtorque won't make a leak!!! overrtorque won't make anything bad!! Real overtorque...well, you will end up with a stripped stud or bolt...

All 8 head bolt can leak, as the bolt by itself is a plug/stopper/cork.... On this picture: http://www.benplace.com/bjp_head2/100_0031.jpg You see 8 studs (this is the engine side, core side, piston and sleeve)! look carefuly.... on this other picture: http://www.benplace.com/bjp_head1/100_0004.jpg You see the head and 8 matching holes!!! the stud goes through the heads: http://www.benplace.com/bjp_head2/100_0037.jpg But the studs are smaller then the holes in the head...so, the stud bolt need to be sealed: http://www.benplace.com/bjp_head2/100_0039.jpg With a sealant.... a good one!!! The black sealent stuff is called: The Right stuff by Permatex, the consumer side of Loctite. Found in any auto part store, you van also use Permatex 518.

But!!! the coolant need to be drain!!! there is no way you can put some sealant there whitout a mess, and that stud and mating surface need to be cleaned and dry: http://www.benplace.com/bjp_head2/100_0024.jpg No need to remove the head for that....

So here are the steps: -drain coolant, find the leaking stud, remove this one, clean the bolt surface and the mating surface, put some sealant, let it dry for a few hours and torque back that stud..... put back coolant and bleed the system.

Anyway, if you are sure at 100% that one stud bolt is leaking, is it really a stud and not a hose connection???? take picture and send it to me!!!

Cheers, Ben http://www.benplace.com/vw2.htm -------------------------------------------------------------------- Had coolant leak so head gasket replaced. Don't know if I really needed head gasket done because ended up with leak again in exact same place. Took to a different person who said looks like it was overtorqued...leaking where bolt goes into engine so he temporary fixed with sealant. This worked well until recently. Guy is no longer around and now it's leaking again. Is there a way to fix as I don't want to buy new block or head whatever the part is called. Will sealant work again or is there a way to insert something so bolt will fit better?
