ANYTHING can be "hammered out". At a shop which once fielded an Indy car, I saw U-joints hammered out. At a large transmission rebuilder who had more presses and pullers than I could count, I saw a bearing locking ring removed from a Volvo axle with nothing more than a beater and a well-used tool which looked like a cape chisel with a half round nose. Also, I once saw a flywheel hammered (really only tapped, once some heat was applied) off its taper fit on a motor-generator set which was part of a critical nuclear safety system. All these were examples of what might be called the craftsmanship of risk, the risk being inversely proportionate to the skill and experience of whoever is slugging the hammer.
