Subject:      spare tire carrier differences?

I have a set of 205/65 R15s on my '84 westy, and the
spare (same size) no longer fits in the spare tire
carrier.


I've heard that later model carriers would hold this
size tire without any problems, so do any of you know
where the difference lies?  Is it in the upper wire
retainer, or in the lower support pan?  Also, if it is
just one part that changed, can you mix and match
(i.e. late model wire retainer, early model pan).
