Pal of mine had one in Belgium. I believe they came as 2.8 liter by using WBX 1.9 pistons and barrels; then 3.2 liter using pistons from the 2.1 WBX . Sadly the heads are supposedly made of the same material as the 1.9 & 2.1 heads. They require the same kind of care.

IIRC VW originally commissioned Oettinger to develop these for the T3 (Vanagon) but decided not to use them. Oettinger went on to production on their own. I see these vans come up for sale on occasion on German Ebay. They came with very interesting interiors. Some had 6 captain's chair style seats usually in leather.
