I usually just use my R-12 gauge set with the high side adapter for R-134a. When you get a R-134a conversion kit it comes with two high side conversion fittings. One of them will fit on the later model Vanagon high side fitting. Just screw the conversion fitting on, do your work and then screw it off and keep it for another time.

I am curious exactly why you are doing A/C work during the winter in Canada?
