Since it's Friday. When I get through stripping a Vanagon for parts it's just a shell of it's old self. With missing Engine, Tranny, A/C system, Dash, Heater controls, wheels, brake rotors/drums, gas tank gone, all glass removed then quite frankly the possibility of recovery to being a full vehicle are very slim. I just can't think of why anybody would buy a stripped out body when they could have a functioning street ready version for a few dollars more. Although Texas isn't a Vanagon haven like the West Coast or Pennsylvania and the East Coast we get our share of rust buckets and body damaged vans here that fall under the wrecking yard crusher for about $175.00 each. There just comes a time when some Vanagons and other cars need to be recycled into soup cans. To those who don't know! The Automobile Core business of Alternator, Starter, Regulator, Carburetor, Brake Booster, Generator, ECU, AFM is gone. There is no longer rebuild buying them since we and they are in a global market. When I asked for a Sanden 709 Compressor the Junk Yard owner said $55.00 no exchange. When I said I might use some other compressor he told me to pick out 10 for $50.00 and one of them would probably be good. As for putting them back on the road: That's the reason for crushing out Vans. I've restored two 82 Westy, one 81 Westy, one 71 Westy, One 83 Westy and One 66 Westy. So what are your counts on dedication to keeping these slugs on the road. The $20,000.00 investment in a single van doesn't qualify anyone except as a daily driver, and that's only if they can keep it running. I currently have only the one 71 Westy that I'm working on.
