They were merely stretched VW Wasserboxers. Not cut & welded, but manufactured as sixes, but with the VW design throughout.

There were two capacities, based on the 1.9 & 2.1 fours; they were 2.8 & 3.2 liters. They performed pretty well, but were grossly overpriced. The 3.2 probably throws rods too...
