And don't bother shopping for price either. Matson has the monopoly on shipping into Hawaii, much to many peoples chagrin.

It's $996 now - to Long Beach. I shipped my '90 back last June. It cost $863 outbound (9/02) and fuel surcharges made it over $900 on the return (6/04).

There's a terrific VW shop in Kailua - the street in front is frequently populated entirely with Vanagons. I counted nine one time. The local VW dealer folded sometime after we moved back to Texas(6/04).

The rust is a problem, although I was quite surprised at how well our cars did during the short stay - no apparent rust. The same cannot be said for our tools and bicycles. It's pretty easy to identify the iron-based parts on a bike after about two weeks.

There are probably more VW vans per square mile on Oahu than any other place in the U.S.. Now, how can I back up that claim? --
