I have seen this before on european cars - if the receiver is on the roof just below where the aerial (sorry antenna ;-) ) is mounted, you can get a little bit of water ingress, and it can condense on the PCB causing reduced performance or temporary failure. Not sure where the sensor is on Vanagon, or if US models have an aerial roof mounted above the internal rear view mirror. The fix is to pull it all apart and seal round the underside of the aerial with mastic.
