Subject: Running now, but idles high after head gasket replacement
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed

It got dark just as I filled the coolant tank enough to drive out of the garage and turn the vanagon around with its nose facing up the driveway in readiness for a full fill tomorrow.

Two things: one, the idle seems to be rising up to 1500 and 2000. I assume that this may be because the return spring or throttle clamp is/are not sitting just right, but I wanted the wisdom of the list to see if there's something I should be expecting or an adjustment I need to do. It's too dark now to look into it, I just want to save time tomorrow.

The other thing is the loud lifters. It's been run for a total of a minute or maybe two, and it has quieted down a LOT from when I first cranked it. Maybe it's just one lifter now. I guess I just want to hear from someone else who's done it that the lifter noise is to be expected.

Thanks,

Jim
