Hi Chris, Vehicle registration is a provincial responsibility, so the process varies by province. An Ontario vehicle is issued an "Ownership" document by the Ministry of Transportation. I dunno how it's done elsewhere in Canada, but I believe it's pretty similar. The "Ownership" blends the function both a title and registration.... the annual license plate fee sticker gets attached to it (and a sticker on the plate as well), and when a vehicle is sold it is signed over to the new owner and taken to the MTO (our DMV) for processing, where they issue a new ownership document in the name of the new owner. An owner with a vehicle coming in from out of province has to go to the MTO with the appropriate paperwork to get a new Ontario ownership issued and purchase an Ontario plate for it, and the original ownership is then destroyed.
