Well that's interesting. Bentley manual for 82 shows the aux heater supplanting then duct, and that has been my experience with 3 82 diesels, but then again the '83 may be different and there is the chance of the dreaded PO influence :)

All in all it makes the discussion of Vanagon trivia much more interesting!
