I sympathize with those of us who have had high torque drills jerked out of their hands; trust me, I know it hurts. One thing that I didn't consider was the possibility of a drill bit fracture. This is a problem with some of the hardened drill bits. I was using a Sears Titanium 3/8ths bit in a hefty 1/2 inch drill and had the drill bit bind up in a piece of metal plate stock. The motor didn't tear out of my hands because the bit exploded into about 6 pieces. One piece of the bit flew past my face missing my eyes by inches and traveling to the ceiling of the garage shattering an 8 foot fluorescent bulb. Needless to say I have a new respect for drill bits and always wear safety glasses now when drilling into metal. |
