The title to my car sits in a safe-deposit box all the time. You wouldn't want to have it in the vehicle. I've never had them even ask for the vehicle registration card at the Canada border.
Vehicles in Ontario have just a registration certificate which we keep in the vehicle or on our person. The title is needed at the border when importing a vehicle into Canada. I think this is what Benny Boy was trying to explain. It is not needed for visiting. The title must be presented to the US customs 72 hours before the vehicle is allowed to exit the USA. The vehicle is not needed nor wanted at the border during this time. They do checks on it then give clearance for exportation. Once you have the exportation approval then you bring the vehicle and pick up that documentation. Then you go deal with the Canadian Customs for importation duties, taxes, conformation etc. I have gone through this ritual a few times now, so this information is from first hand experience.
