I've always wondered about that setup - 'twould be neat to have a permanent metal arrangement to replace the plastic, smog-failing, mother-fathers. Stainless steel would be best - no corrosion, and strong enough to take gravel strikes. Just make sure it doesn't rub on any frame members and wear a hole in it. Don't know about installation - do you have to bend the plastic filler a little to install it?
