Chris,

I tried to reply earlier, but I seem to be having a problem with email bouncing from AOL . It's not just your account, it has happened with two others in the last couple of days, and it seems to be happening with more than one email account. I have referred the issue to my email service provider, you might want to do the same.

So I'll reply in public... the information may become helpful to others.

My earlier post was referring to JimT's comment about importing U.S. vehicles into Canada. He said:

> My notes on going from the US to Canada refer to a lot of tax loop=20 > jumping in addition to the safety standards issues.

Sorry to say, but I don't know much about the laws are about taking vehicles south. I did sell a 1976 motorcycle and trailer to a guy from Michigan back in the summer of 2002, and he later told me that he had no problems... He just declared the purchase, paid his duties and went on through. There wasn't even a plate on the trailer! (Michigan doesn't have license plates for small trailers, so it wasn't an issue for him.)

I don't think it matters whether a Canadian is at the wheel as long as the driver has current tags, insurance, title and bill of sale in their possession at the border. If they are missing any of those they are just asking for trouble. Canadians have to stop and pay import duties right at the border crossing; I would expect that American regulations are probably similar.

Usually the main problem is getting your state DMV to issue a local title and/or tag. Requirements will vary quite by state, and within each state it varies again depending on the attitude of the local DMV office. This was a common topic on the vintage motorcycle list I used to be on... <www.vjmc.com> . AFAIK the laws about motorcycles are the same as for cars. Take a few minutes and trip down to your local DMV and ask the clerk what's required.... but be prepared for the person at the counter not to know, and to wait while they find a supervisor to ask. And for that supervisor to find a book and look it up.

Also be prepared to get a second opinion from another DMV office if the first one is a PITA. Patience is a virtue with the DMV, and it helps to be relaxed and smiling... When the person across the counter holds all the cards, attitude is important. Get them on your side, and it'll be a lot easier. Good luck with it...
