I was wondering the same thing... I was also wondering if any Diesel Vanagon (or other I-4) owners had gone through similar experiences, and if so, what were the most effective methods to reducing engine noise and intake noise? I've heard a few reports over on the DV list, but thought I'd ask the greater list community, since some of the Diesel issues may also be common to other I-4 engines.
