Subject: Re: oil spray on startup when very cold
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

hmm, sounds like something that just happened to me... I just got my 81 vanagon running for the first time in 5-7 years last weekend (yay!) and had the same type of spray pattern. I thought the oil cooler was leaking, so I went ahead and went through the pains of pulling the oil cooler. Once I pressure tested it, I didn't detect a leak... the orings might be deceiving me because they didn't appear to be leaking. I thought that maybe the fan might be blowing oil through the cooler somehow if the oring/seal is bad, but I'm not sold on that theory as of yet. Wouldn't the oil blow out both sides of the engine? Let me know what you find when you go to repair that leak. I'd like to know in case my theory is bunk.

At the very least, I'll know the oil cooler seals and the fan hub seal/oring has been replaced when I put my vanagon in full service....

Thanks, Mark http://www.veedubbin.com
