Hi Jim,

Our family has imported or assisted in the import of four VWs into Canada from the US over the last few years. If the vehicle is over 15 years old and is a model that was sold in Canada when new then the import procedure is very straightforward... The primary issue in the process is that the title needs to be filed with the "Export Title Clerk" at a designated border crossing 72 hours in advance of the border crossing. When you get to the border the guard will pull your paperwork and you pay the appropriate import duties (Including $100 Air Conditioning tax, etc, etc) and you're on your way. No big deal.

Back in October my parents flew out to Seattle and drove the 2900 miles home in a 67 VW camper. They had no troubles with the title or import while following the above procedure. Same thing a few weeks ago when they imported a 1983 westy from near Buffalo.

Vehicles newer than 15 years of age are different. I am not familiar with that process, but vanagons built before 1990 will be no problem to import into Canada if they are accompanied by the appropriate paperwork.

Happy trails,
