Subject: How hard is it to retrofit power steering in a Syncro?

Hi Volks, Just as the subject says. I want to install power steering in my 1986 Syncro Westfalia High Top. Not that steering is an issue, but the motor that I am installing into this van IS the issue. I have a European Passat TDI pump düse engine (ATJ engine code) that I want to install. Now power steering was never an option in the Passat / Audi A6 so it is almost impossible to remove the power steering pump from this engine without a little bit of creative bracket assembly. Remember, in engine conversions, creative accessory belt brackets means vibrations - we don't want that! :-)

So, my options are to install something that needs hydraulic oil like power steering or loop the pump back on itself so it won't be destroyed from a lack of lubrication.

Is installing power steering as simple as swapping steering racks and running some hydraulic lines or is it more involved?

Also, the later style VW / Audi pumps require hydraulic oil. The manual calls for the expensive G-whatever stuff, which is something like $20 a liter for the Pentosin. Will "normal" hydraulic oil at $20 for 20L work?

Thanks in advance! David Marshall
