Subject:      weird hazard light electrical gremlin

After installing my oil pressure gage, i've developed
a minor electrical gremlin that i havn't had the best
luck solving.

The light bulb on the hazard light switch (and defrost
baby bulb) glows when the car is running, and goes
from very dim to moderately bright - directly
proportional to engine RPM.

This does not happen if you disconnect the harness
from the instrument cluster (where the hazard switch
light is grounded to), and you ground the switch
directly to the chassis.

Interesting thing is, if you ground the switch
directly to the chassis while the harness is still
plugged into the instrument cluster, the engine dies
(and won't start).

So is this the tach signal leaking on to/shorting to
the ground wire?  Can anyone shed some light on this
(so to speak)?
