Most vendors have the sump plate senders. Just drill a hole in the plate and mount the sender exactly where Porsche mounts their Type IV senders.

If you have an 81 air cooled, I wonder if the dipstick sender would work. I had on on my 79 bus and it worked fine with the VDO gauge(VDO made the sender too).

Ken Lewis sent me a cool mod foro his temp sender. He made a plate that covered the hole on his 2.1 oil filler at the block and the sender screwed in there. He bought an EMPI filler for the 4 bolt thingie where the generator stand used to sit for adding oil to the engine.

My 2.1 I took a brass adapter I found on ebay for a few dollars. I had a VDO temp sender with a 10mmx1mm thread pitch and this particular adapter had a big hex nut shape and had the 14x 1.5 pitch for the drain plug of the 2.1 and the 10x1 pitch for the sender on the other end. Yeah, the wire is a little vulnerable to road hazards, but it hasn't fallen off yet. I found our napa store stocks several vdo senders and can order about anything vdo sells.

My donation to the cause.

Max
