The gravity damper seals require a fairly specific type of foam. If the replacement foam is too thick or too dense, the minor weight of the damper will not force the foam into a tight seal.

Regarding your efforts to rejuvenate the blower motor, in my experience such efforts produce short-lived results. I've even gone to the trouble of soaking brass bushing bearings in heated oil. The results were always the same: the motor would run great for a short while then stop working all too soon. I tend to think that once the pores of an Oilite-type bearing become glazed or filled, they is little which can be done to renew it.

I've never had the occasion to attempt it, but perhaps with some careful work the bushings of a Vanagon blower motor (and the brushes) could be replaced. It might require machining an Oilite blank to an oddball size. Short of that, it is best to replace a squealing or locked blower motor.
