I rebuilt my '85 Jetta motor (which I believe is a similar bushing design), dismantled, cleaned bushings, greased and re-installed, and it lasted about a month. Then, in desperation, not wanting to tear it down again, I just pulled the motor, and dribbled a few drops of Redline MTL synthetic gear oil into the bushing. The motor lasted for well over a year with that fix before it made noise again, and a repeat bought me another year or more. This was in a car with over 400k kms, and I drove with the fan on low all the time. Since the motor is easily accessible in a Jetta, this was an ok fix. In a Vanagon, access is not so easy, so a more permanent fix may be in order. But if you're inclined to try new lube, I suggest synth gear oil...
