Consider that R12 was used as spray can propellant for years before It was used in Auto or other refrigeration needs. Typically an Auto A/C system expelled its gas when the car was in a frontal crash, ten years after it's purchase date needing a recharge or when the car went to a wrecking yard. My 86 Olds still has its R 12 charge and my 92 Crown Vic just had to re recharged after 11 years because the seal on the compressor failed. With millions of cans of hair spray used each day worldwide and millions of spray paint cans I think that the Auto AC was just the scapegoat for lots of the environmental woes. Proportionately I don't think Auto A/C was the 99% culprit, more like just 10% to blame.
