I had a VW diesel- an '80 Rabbit with a 1.5, later a 1.5/1.6 hybrid (long story). I suppose you could say I was making nasty fumes as I crept slowly through unfamiliar territory. It got great mileage, even with the AC and it had a five speed. I suppose I could've gotten even better mileage if I had made a practice of getting out and trotting alongside it, but I figured a ride was the least I could demand of the thing. I was giving a co-worker a ride home once- he weighed 'about' 400 lbs, and I weighed about 240 at the time. We hit this hill near his house... he had to get out and walk up the thing while I waited at the top for him. I hated that engine. It hated me, too- at least that's what it said in its suicide note. However, I did once pass Schwarzenegger in his red ragtop Corvette on the 14 in that car. His license plate said 'YOCONAN'. That's another long story.
