Pete, you certainly need to have the insulation wrap around the canvas. It helps a lot, we used it quite often on our trip to Burning Man and you will see it in some of the pics here > _Burning Man '04_ (http://burningman04.jiddware.com/) . It was an official Westfalia option but can be duplicated easily from double bubble insulating material available from building supplies. I have a dimensions plan at > _Westy poptop insulation jpg_ (http://members.aol.com/fkc43/graphics/vanagon/misc/insulation.jpg) This plan came from a member of the Quebec club. When I made mine from these plans I found the height measurement not right and had to add 4", I think, so I would measure your total canvas height all around before cutting anything. The width of the material is sufficient to accommodate the extra height if needed. Happy camping !
