Hi Thanks to all who answered. I was doing an archives search with the wrong keywords when I decided to send my question. It's a beat up subject in the archives. And I don't think there is a definite answer. There are several options: a locker from a syncro. a limited slip differential (LSD) from Weddle (Lockrite?). None seems to make a consensus. All involve quite a lot or work and money. Also, think of it before you have you trans rebuild. Do as I say, not as.... On the other hand, I think the suggested dual/split hand brake has a good potential. Lots of buggies (lighter) seem to do that. I quickly learnt there was no such set up available: there is no cheap answer. Nothing under the 1000$ mark really. I think going syncro is maybe a better investment than going halfway. Oh yes: the cheap answer is again common sense: get 2 or 4 real winter tires. studded or not. In my case, that's what I will do. Even if I usually do not drive my westy in winter. I'll probably go this way. 4 hakka. I won't get the 'get-out-from-any situation' capability. But I'll get some nice daily winter driving capability and peace of mind too. Anyway, I'll go to my Vanagon Anonymous meeting tonight to talk about this. Thanks for your help! JP
