I've decided to sell my 1987 Syncro now, since I can't drive it anymore or
even work on it much (bad knee, going to <shudder> an automatic).
1987 Vanagon GL Syncro, 7 passenger, Titian Red Metallic w/brown interior,
~180K miles on van, ~40K miles on engine. Transaxle does not have diff
lock. A/C converted to R134 (and works fine for me - even when I was in
Phoenix, AZ). All windows except windshield tinted at 35%.
New within the last 8 months - battery, voltage regulator, headlight relay
kit, ignition switch, O2 sensor, catalytic converter, muffler, tailpipe,
pedal pads, window cranks, all belts, spark plugs, fuel filter, engine/front
differential/transaxle oil, etc.
The good - runs and drives great, transaxle shifts fine in all gears, VC
works and is not overly aggressive, no drive shaft vibration, tires have at
least 50% tread left (BFG A/T 27x8.50x14 LT on steel rims), headlights have
Volks Cafe relay kit, front differential has Red Line 75W-90 synthetic oil,
K&N air filter. Passed Arizona smog (after replacing all of the above), van
is currently registered in Arizona with clear title.
The bad - [NOTE - don't panic, I am listing everything I can think of] -
fuel smell when tank is full (vent lines? There is no sign of fuel in engine
compartment , on the ground or anywhere else I can find), transmission needs
to be resealed (leaks ~ 1/2 cup a month), Odometer/trip meter does not work
(I have set it at ~180K as calculated by my GPS to reflect actual mileage
+200 miles, as I was going to send it in for repair), right rear CV joint
boot torn (no CV noise though), right rear head (or possibly a hose) is
weeping coolant, coolant expansion tank leaks a little bit around the level
sensor, rear A/C section hangs down (won't fall, it just doesn't meet the
roofline anymore), rear heater blower doesn't work (fuses good, bad
switch?), there are two small rust areas - one on the drivers side
horizontal seam (~ 1/4" x 3") and one in front of the passenger rear tire
well (about the same as the other side), clear coat is peeling on the roof,
clock doesn't work, no radio, antenna broken, right rear marker light
doesn't work, missing drivers left seat arm.
The extras - Original owners, warrantee and dealer locator manuals, dealer
cassette tape in original plastic folder. Also have new 1986 Syncro
supplement (1987's are NLA, and I didn't get the original one), I will
change the engine oil with either Pennzoil 20W-50 or Mobil 1 15W-50
synthetic (with Mann oil filter) prior to delivery (or include it for you to
do), comes with Red Line MT-90 oil for transaxle ($13 a quart - due to oil
leak changed transaxle oil last time with petroleum oil), probably other
things I am forgetting. May include (depending on price) a used pair of
power mirrors, complete with switch and most of the wiring harness to
install.
I was going to fix a bunch of the little things, but I am out of money and
with my knee I can't do a lot of the stuff anyway. This is a good van to do
some minor fixing up and drive or a good base for a real nice van, depending
on the amount of time/money put into her.
I may be able to accept credit cards for up to $750 - or so (I need parts
for the 1988, of course!). Will consider a partial trade for a street
motorcycle. For pictures, please see the link below. The pictures are from
when I bought the van, I will be adding updated pictures tomorrow, with
close up pictures of the minor rust, etc.
