My answer was partly based on the fact that the tires were known to be inadequate. Whenever traction is a problem, you need to start there. Since a diff-lock is definitely not a lower cost alternative than 4 studded or ice gripping winter tires, I suggest the tires first. Also, the diff lock is only effective if one of the tires can get traction. If they both spin, you're still stuck.

This is true for driving on ice, but a locker will get you unstuck and get you rolling again . . . most of the time. Whether or not it is worth the expense depends on how often you want to try something stupid.

On this list, someone at sometime during the past six months mentioned seeing Vanagons with limited slip rear-ends in Central or South America travel on back roads which would give pause to a Pinzgauer. Maybe the LSD's are available from VWSA.
