Am sure you know the following:

In all 2WD, there is no need to remove the tranny, neither the drive axles. Just the shifter lever need to be remove from trany. (I cannot believe i don't have a picture of that!!!!)

On all engine: -Put the "Jack" under the tranny, about midway (Balance!). -Unscrew all 4 bolt from the front trany mount/holder -Lower the tranny, about...Mmmm... maybe 8 to 10inches (front) -put a jack/stand under the engine -pull the trany out until the drive axles are fully stretch. -Now you have about 10 to 12 inches of free space between the engine and trany, enough to do the job.

If you need more space, just unscrew 1 drive axle, trany side. http://www.benplace.com/images_westfalia/inside_drive_shaft.jpg

Now you have plenty of space.

To make a good trany holder with your cheap jack! simply drill 2 hole in the jack and screw a flat 1 x 1 feet of plywood, on each side of the plywood, put 1 (1x1x12in) piece of wood, there you have a tranny holder. To make sure it doesn't fall, you can shim this one with small pieces of wood, it also help to shim to get the appropriate angle to put the trany back in...

I guess my english explanation sucks!!! he he he... am better with pictures a guess, he he he.

Good luck Bro Ben http://www.benplace.com/vanagon_engine4.htm
