search the archives for: author = stebbins, subject = Carb (or For = carb) - since 1998, and you'll get all I have said about my 91 syncro westy with a carb.

My van's Weber DFAV (or DFEV) runs fine, except for right around the freezing point on wet days, I get some carb icing (but I now have the coolant plumbed through the intake manifold and that should help). I get about the same fuel economy as others. It took a lot of jetting work, so buy the jet kit too.

greatest benefit is carbs rarely catastrophically/suddenly fail, but rather go bad over time. the biggest 'problem' is that if your state (Ohio??) has emision tests, your van will most likely fail the test. other problems are: when cold, Carb icing, when hot, and vapour lock.

If you want to try a carb, I have a Solex carb that used to be on my van and a Pierburg carb that was on the european vans. both are for sale cheap + shipping. or see CIP1.com for a carb set up for AIR cooled vans (they also sell the Weber, but do not have the intake manifold for the water cooled vans. dual carbs are harder to balance than a single carb.

Oh yes, I delete all of the AFM, ECU, O2, Temp II posts :-)

I can say that if bought a FI van, at the first hint of FI problems, I put in a carb. M
